5 Things to Look for in a Property Ownership Attorney

May 10, 2022 by Mark Mellor

If you’re in the market for a property ownership attorney, it’s important to know what to look for. Not all attorneys are created equal, and you’ll want to make sure you choose one who is experienced, educated, reputable and responsive.  In this blog post, we will go over five things you should look for in a property ownership attorney. We’ll also discuss some of the most important factors to consider when making your decision.

Your Property Ownership Attorney Should Have:

1. Experience

One of the most important things to look for in a property ownership attorney is experience. You’ll want to choose an attorney who has extensive experience handling property ownership issues. The last thing you want is to hire an attorney who is inexperienced and doesn’t know how to handle your case. Experience is vital in the property ownership world because the laws are constantly changing. You’ll want an attorney who is up-to-date on the latest changes and can help you navigate the ever-changing landscape.

2. Education

In addition to experience, you’ll also want to choose an attorney who is well-educated. A property ownership attorney should have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. This ensures that your attorney has the knowledge and skills necessary to handle your case. You should also make sure that your property ownership attorney stays up-to-date on education by taking continuing legal education courses. These courses keep attorneys abreast of the latest changes in the law, which helps them better serve their clients. Does the attorney have ancillary experience or education, in the area of real estate. For example, is the attorney also a licensed real estate Broker, or perhaps mortgage loan originator?  Both would be helpful if you are dealing with purchase and sale issues involving real estate.

3. Reputation

When choosing a property ownership attorney, you’ll also want to consider their reputation. You’ll want to choose an attorney who is well-respected by their peers and clients. A good way to research an attorney’s reputation is to read online reviews and testimonials.

4. Communication

Another important thing to look for in a property ownership attorney is communication. You’ll want to choose an attorney who is responsive to your calls and emails. You should also feel comfortable communicating with your attorney.  Dealing with property ownership can be a sensitive process, given how much is at stake. You need to find an attorney who is not only easy to communicate with but easy to reach in an emergency or when you have questions about the case. A good attorney will put your mind at ease and help you through the difficult process.

5. Cost

Finally, you’ll want to consider fees when choosing a property ownership attorney. Choose an attorney who charges a reasonable fee for his or her services. When comparing fees, be sure to compare the quality of service as well.
